October 27, 2010 – Kabul, Afghanistan
An Afghan Kuchi girl covers her face as she attends a class in a tent in front of the ruins of the Darlaman palace which was destroyed during the civil war, on the outskirts of Kabul.

Shah Marai was chief photographer of the AFP in Kabul. He was killed in a double suicide bombing in April 2018. The AFP and the Bayeux Calvados-Normandy Award wanted to include in this selection one of his old photos. An exhibition will pay tribute to his work at the Museum of the Battle of Normandy during the 25th edition of the Bayeux Award in October.
